Approximately 15% of patients
carry genes that increase the
risk of having a delayed type
metal hypersensitivity reaction

Metal hypersensitivity can cause inflammation and pain in some patients who receive cobalt chrome implants. MyOrthotype is an easy-to-use saliva test that can tell if you if you carry genes placing you at higher risk of developing this condition. This information can be shared with your surgeon, so that the most appropriate implants can be selected for you.

The Orthotype tests were developed with the backing of Innovate UK and the Academic Health Science Networks of the North East and North Cumbria.

Orthotype research was carried out in collaboration with the University Hospital of North Tees, Nuffield Health, the New York Hospital for Special Surgery, the Royal Perth Hospital, Australia, and Newcastle University.

How does it work?

We use NHS accredited laboratories to perform next generation genetic sequencing to identify if you, or the person you care for, carry the genes that place you at higher risk

The process

Step 1

Once purchased, we send you the MyOrthotype test by post.

Step 2

Follow the simple instructions in the pack to provide a saliva sample, and contact details, then return the sample in the pre-paid packaging.

Step 3

Your saliva sample is analysed by an NHS approved lab to see if you carry the genes that place you at higher risk, and your report is emailed to you.

The test was easy to do at home, and I sent it back in the post. A couple of weeks later I learned that I have the genes that might make me more likely to react badly to the most commonly used knee replacement implants. Having this information is empowering because my doctor can use it to choose the best kind of implant for me, which makes me feel a lot more confident about having the surgery.
